Dr. Salama is a co-leader (with Louis J. Allamandola) of the Astrochemistry Laboratory of Ames' Space Science Division. He has extensive experience in the fields of low temperature and collisional molecular spectroscopy which he applies to laboratory astrophysics and astrochemistry. He is also active in infrared and optical astronomy (ground-based and airborne). Current research interests include the study of the physical and chemical properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and ice analogs relevant to interstellar, cometary, and planetary environments. For example, a particular effort is devoted to the study of the diffuse interstellar bands through combined laboratory and astronomical spectroscopy in the ultraviolet and visible ranges.
